Today I Joined a Preschool

Today I Joined a Preschool

by Liza Martini
Jaxon is new in town and decides the best way to make friends is to join a preschool and commence his education. But as he comes late to the term, he must learn the rules as he goes and discern some rather unusual playtime traditions. When his curiosity compels him to cross a ponderous playground, he discovers a world of warm sand and his imagination takes flight.
2026 Book of the Year

3 Review Event Comments.

During the review of this wonderful book, I really liked that the story looks at starting preschool from the child’s perspective. As a parent, I could see using Jaxon’s experience to start a conversation about meeting new people and walking into an unfamiliar classroom. It gives us something to talk about beyond simply telling a child that school will be fun.
What stood out to me was the connection between starting preschool and making friends. As an educator, I would use that theme to ask children how we can help someone who is new to our classroom feel included. I appreciate a book that can open up a discussion about being welcoming, not just about being the new student.
I really loved this book. I kept thinking about children who start after the school year is already underway. That situation deserves attention, and I liked seeing it reflected in Jaxon’s story. I also thought the illustrations were wonderful! I highly recommend this book for any family with a child getting ready to start preschool.
